Our Inspiration
To reduce suffering from the tragic loss of loved ones to heart disease in our community.
In late October 2010, shortly after completing his undergraduate studies in Cameroon, our Founder, Barney Mbigha, received a call informing him that his father had fallen ill. He rushed back to his hometown and took his father to the hospital. George walked into the waiting area on his own feet, quickly brightening the room with his great sense of humor. Just two hours after receiving an injection, tragedy struck as George suffered a fatal heart attack. He passed away in his son's arms moments later. George, who was 68 at this time, had high blood pressure that went undiagnosed and uncontrolled for years. Although his father had just begun receiving medication, sadly, it was too late.
Born out of tragedy, the Peace and Comfort Heart Foundation was founded to honor the memories of George Tamengyeh Ndangang and Frida Akwese Ndangang.
A few months after his father’s passing, Barney relocated to the United States. He later learned that his Mother had been diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. Courageously, she battled these conditions for over a decade before joining her son in the states. Ultimately, disaster struck again in November 2021, barely six weeks after his Mother returned from a trip to Cameroon. Like her Husband, Frida too experienced a heart attack, passing away in her son's arms before the paramedics arrived. She was 69.
Barney decided that he had to do something - not only for himself and the more than 30 children and grandchildren that his parents left behind, but for his community. That is when the Peace & Comfort Heart Foundation was born.
